St. Martin has long been on my travel wish list, and it truly lived up to its name as "The Friendly Island." From the crystal-clear turquoise waters to the vibrant culture, this Caribbean gem captured my heart. My family and I spent a week immersed in its beauty, and it’s safe to say we’re already planning our return. Here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable experience.
The Allure of Orient Bay
We decided to base ourselves in Orient Bay, and it was the best decision we could have made. Known as the "St. Tropez of the Caribbean," Orient Bay perfectly blends laid-back beach vibes with a chic French atmosphere. The beach itself is stunning, with powdery white sand and that iconic blue water that’s so inviting you can’t help but dive in. The gentle waves made it ideal for swimming, even for our kids, and there were plenty of water sports options for the more adventurous.
Orient Bay is lined with charming restaurants offering everything from fresh seafood to decadent pastries. We spent many leisurely meals enjoying the ocean breeze while savoring delicious French-inspired cuisine. It felt like a slice of Europe in the Caribbean, and we loved every moment.

Exploring the Island with a Hire Car
One of the highlights of our trip was exploring the rest of the island with a hire car. St. Martin’s compact size makes it easy to see a lot in just a few days, and each area has its own unique charm.
A must-visit spot for us was Rainbow Café in Grand Case. This beachfront paradise is the perfect place to unwind. We bought a bottle of rosé and spent the afternoon sipping and staring out standing at the table set right at the shoreline, sipping rosé while gazing out toward Anguilla in the distance. The gentle waves lapping at our feet and the breathtaking view of the white sand meeting the turquoise sea made it a truly magical experience.
Stunning Views from Fort Louis
Another highlight was our trip to Marigot, the capital of the French side. After a pleasant drive, we arrived in this quaint town with its colorful markets and charming streets. From there, we hiked to the top of Fort Louis. A word of advice: bring water! The climb is steep, especially under the Caribbean sun, but it’s absolutely worth it. Once at the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of the island and beyond to Anguilla. It’s a picture-perfect spot and a great place to take in the beauty of St. Martin from above.

Shopping and Fun in Philipsburg
No trip to St. Martin would be complete without a day in Philipsburg, the bustling capital of the Dutch side. The shopping experience here is fantastic, with everything from high-end boutiques to local souvenir shops. Strolling along Front Street, we found unique treasures to bring home and enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere.
Next time, I plan to linger longer in Philipsburg and try one of the fun beachfront restaurants that caught my eye. The colorful umbrellas and lively vibes make it the perfect place to relax and enjoy a meal with a view.

Maho Beach: A Bucket List Experience
Of course, we couldn’t miss the famous Maho Beach. Known for its close proximity to the airport, it’s the place to witness planes landing just meters above your head. To make the most of the experience, check the flight arrivals for a larger plane like one from Montreal. It’s thrilling to watch, but be prepared for the jet blasts during takeoff! Hold onto your belongings, as the wind can send them flying down the beach. While it’s a one-and-done for me, I’m so glad we did it. The kids thought it was incredible, and it’s definitely a memory we’ll cherish.

Planning Our Return
We fell in love with St. Martin so much that we’re already planning to return this year—and for a longer stay! There’s something about the island’s vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and welcoming atmosphere that keeps drawing us back. Next time, I’m looking forward to discovering more hidden gems, spending even more time soaking up the sun and sea, and, of course, revisiting our favorite spots like Orient Bay and Rainbow Café.
If you’re dreaming of a Caribbean getaway, I can’t recommend St. Martin enough. It’s the perfect destination for families, couples, and solo travelers alike, offering a little bit of everything—from relaxation to adventure.
